World Earth Day: 3 questions for Yarrah

Today, on 22 April, we celebrate World Earth Day. A day dedicated to sustainability and environmental protection. The purpose of this day is to make people think about their buying habits, and their impact on the earth.
At Yarrah, we believe in the power of sustainability. That's why we only produce high-quality organic, sustainable food. In this blog, we explain to you through three questions how we are doing our bit for a better planet.

1. Why sustainable pet food?

Pets are part of our daily lives and we want the best for them. But what many people do not realise is that ordinary pet food is often made from cheap raw materials that are far from being sustainably produced. In many cases, these cheap ingredients are sprayed with pesticides and contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) And that is not only bad for our planet, but also for the health of our pets.

At Yarrah, we not only use the highest quality ingredients, but also produce our recipes sustainably. Producing sustainably means minimising environmental impact during production. This includes things like the use of water, energy and raw materials. But it also includes waste generated during production.

2. Why do you choose to add plant-based ingredients to your recipes?

We choose to develop several types of recipes with different combinations of plant and/or animal ingredients, which are organically sourced. For example, we make many of our wet foods with almost exclusively organic meat, and our vegetarian dog treats consist only of organic plant-based ingredients, such as rice, peas and other legumes.

We do this for several reasons:

Sustainability: especially in our kibbles, we use plant-based ingredients as much as possible. This is because vegetable ingredients are easy to incorporate into kibble and it generally takes less land, water and energy to make vegetable ingredients than animal ingredients. This can help reduce the environmental impact of producing our feed. When we do use animal ingredients, we only use the organic meat scraps, which we humans don't eat. A shame to throw away, as these are actually fine organic ingredients for your pet.

Allergies: Some pets are allergic or hypersensitive to certain animal proteins, such as in chicken or beef. Using food based solely on vegetable ingredients can then offer an alternative.

Ethical choice: Some pet owners give their pets a plant-based diet for ethical reasons, such as concerns about animal welfare in meat production or environmental impact. In such cases, our organic vegetarian dog treats are a logical choice.

Overall, then, the use of plant-based organic ingredients in our food offers a sustainable, nutritious and ethical alternative. However, it is important to ensure that the food is properly formulated and meets your pet's nutritional needs. So preferably give a complete food prepared with care as a base (which for dogs can be either 100% plant-based or with animal ingredients) and alternate that with, for example, snacks or special wet food to give your pet an extra treat.

3. Why is biodiversity important for the planet and how does Yarrah contribute to this?

Biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms that exist in a particular ecosystem or across the planet. This includes not only different species of plants and animals, but also the genetic diversity within those species, and the diversity of ecosystems themselves.

Yarrah contributes to biodiversity by using sustainable agricultural practices that put the health and welfare of animals and their ecosystems first. By using ingredients that are responsibly sourced and avoiding harmful chemicals (such as pesticides) and practices, we help protect biodiversity and ensure the long-term health of our planet.

For example, we use only organic ingredients, which helps support healthy ecosystems and protect biodiversity. We also use farming techniques that are less harmful to the environment, such as regenerative farming, which can help restore biodiversity in areas that have been degraded by common farming practices.

In short, by putting sustainability and responsible farming practices first, you help preserve biodiversity and contribute to a healthier planet.

Yarrah and World Earth Day

World Earth Day is an important day for us at Yarrah. We feel it is important to give insight into our production process and how we contribute to a more sustainable world by doing so.We hope the questions above have made you a little wiser.
