Frequent allergies among dogs

Animals can be allergic to certain substances or products just like humans. We will tell you all about the most frequent allergies and what you can do to help your dog.

Different types of allergies

We distinguish between food allergies and other types of allergies. Examples of frequently occurring allergies are dust mite and fleas. Both are easy to treat. The article ‘What to do when my dog has fleas’ explains how to treat fleas. When your dog has a dust mite allergy, try washing your dog pillows and baskets at the highest possible temperatures. The mite won’t survive temperatures above 95 degrees Celsius.

Food allergy

Food allergies take third place when it comes to frequently occurring allergies. Frequently occurring allergens (substances your dog may be allergic to) are: beef, chicken, egg, corn, wheat, soy and milk.

Recognising food allergies

There are several symptoms that may indicate a food allergy. Some examples:

Itching
Skin problems
Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
Excessive bowel movement

You can put your dog on an elimination diet in order to find the allergen, eliminating different substances until the allergic reaction stops.
