But how can you be sure the food you buy is truly organic?

How to recognise truly organic pet food

1. Check the EU organic label
   Since 1 January 2022, strict rules apply within the EU for labelling pet food as organic. Only food made with at least 95% organically grown ingredients may carry the EU organic label. This label can be recognised by the green leaf made of EU stars.
2. Read the ingredients list carefully
   Truly organic food clearly states which ingredients are organic. Look for terms such as ‘biologisch’, ‘organic’ or ‘bio’ in the ingredients list. If less than 95% of the ingredients are organic, the product may not be marketed as organic, although the organic ingredients can still be listed.
3. Look for additional certifications
   In addition to the EU label, there are other reliable certifications, such as:
   • EKO label: A Dutch certification indicating that a product meets EU organic production standards.
   • Demeter: A label for biodynamic agriculture, which goes a step further than organic.
   • ECOCERT: An international certification for organic products.
