Tips for cats with a fear of fireworks.

For many pets and owners, setting off fireworks at New Year's Eve is no fun. Cats and dogs are often especially sensitive to the loud bangs and bright lights. It is also not surprising that cats react differently to fireworks. Cats' hearing is many times better than that of humans. As a result, the loud bangs and hissing of fireworks also come in much louder. As the owner of a cat with a fear of fireworks; you naturally want to know how to help your cat. In this article, we will give you some handy tips to reduce your cat's stress and make him feel safe during fireworks.

Create a safe space

Cats like to have their own space where they can retreat to when they feel stressed or anxious. Make sure there is such a quiet space available for your cat to go to during the fireworks. This could include a dedicated cat room with places to snuggle or hide, toys and familiar scents.

Keep your cat inside

Outside is extra exciting for cats. The noises are louder and in addition to the loud noises and bright flurries, they have to be mindful of people, cars and dogs, for example. Moreover, you also don't want to stress yourself about your cat being outside.

Stay calm yourself

Your cat can sense your mood very well, even if it sometimes doesn't seem that way. If you are calm and relaxed, your cat is more likely to be too. Sticking to the usual routine in terms of eating, playing and sleeping will help your cat stay calm; and yourself too.

Avoid exposure to fireworks

Try to avoid exposure to the noise and flashes of light from fireworks as much as possible. Close windows and curtains to muffle the noise and keep out the flashes of light. For example, play soothing music or turn on the television to muffle outside noise. An extra treat, such as a snack or some tasty wet food, can also help your pet relax.

Offer distraction and comfort

Try distracting your cat with toys and/or treats during the fireworks. This will keep your pet's attention away from the scary noises and bright lights outside. In addition, give him or her extra attention by cuddling and playing together.

Behavioural training

It is possible to gradually get your cat used to fireworks noises through behavioural training techniques. This process requires patience, but can be effective in reducing fear reactions in the long run.
