What to do if my dog has fleas?

Fleas are annoying parasites that can cause a bad itch. Luckily, you can prevent infection by using a flea repellent. Below you’ll find more information about dog fleas.

What are fleas?

Fleas are parasites that occur year-round. They cause an annoying itch in dogs and may transfer diseases or other parasites such as tapeworm. To prevent your dog from being infected with worms, you should deworm your dog four times a year.

Recognising fleas

Fleas occur wherever there are mammals. They wait for a prey and either drop or jump on board. You’ll often find them on the back, groin or armpits. You can perform a flea check to see if your dog is infected with the parasite. You’ll recognise them by their small black faeces or eggs which are small and white.

Flea check in 3 steps

  1. Comb your dog with a flea comb.
  2. Do you see small black dots? These may be flea faeces.
  3. Squash the dots with a piece of wet paper towel. If they turn red, you’re dealing with flea faeces.

Combating fleas

Is your dog suffering from fleas? Use a flea repellent to destroy the fleas. Various agents are available. Keep in mind that fleas aren’t just living on your dog, but in its environment as well. Treat your pillows, blankets and the upholstery of your car as well. If you can wash blankets and covers, wash them at a temperature of at least 60 degrees.

Preventing fleas

Prevention is better than treatment, this applies especially to a stubborn flea infestation. Treat your dog preventively. You can use collars, tablets or a pipette. Each type of treatment has its own approach and persistence. Inform yourself properly to make sure you apply the agent correctly.
